There are many land and cultural boundaries of the South. There are political ideologies and religious sects. All are unique in their own respect but Black or White, Rural or Urban, Southerners have the Dixie experience in common. Dixie is not a particular place or a language or even a definable culture. It is more like a mystical aura flavored by the traditions of pioneering, plantation life, civil war, reconstruction, segregation and the struggles for civil rights. The spirit of Dixie is what drives the lifestyle of the Deep South.
The Southern presence of mind is a very difficult thing to adopt. Anyone desiring to become a real Southerner has probably already started too late in life.
